Departing from tenth to thirteenth-century geographical sources (al-Kindi, al-Biruni, al-Tarsusi, Fakhr Mudabbir) on sabre making in Istrawshan, and on the latter’s mention in Persian poetry of later periods of time (by ‘Umar Khayyam, in particular), the author depicts the damascening process, and the types of alloys and of curves preferred by mediaeval Central Asian blacksmiths.
