Through the biography of Grigorii Nikolaevich Potanin (1835-1920) the author stresses the significance of cultural relations between the nascent Kazakh intelligentsia and exiled Russian intellectuals in Western Siberia during the post-Reform period.  Potanin’s place is restored in the development, through these exchanges, of scientific research and political thought on questions such as regional autonomy (oblastnichestvo), identity, education.
