In this comparative historical study, the authors sketch parallels between the fate of the Mountaineer Republic of 1918 and the destiny of the Chechen Republic after 1991. Insisting on the lack of an external international support in both 1918 and 1991, the article also casts light on the inner divisions which, in both cases, have led to the establishment of ‘Islamic’ governments.
