This paper is an attempt at relocating the Azerbaijani national mouvement in the context of present-day Iranian politics. In the late 1980s an Azerbaijani cultural revival has been encouraged by the disappearance of the Soviet system and the overall nationalist agitation north of the Aras River. In Iranian Azerbaijan nationalist intellectuals have been agitating ethnic symbols and tried to construct a new identity of which they were to be the guardians. The author casts light on how the failed opening up of the Iranian regime in the mid-2000s (especially after the election of M. Ahmadinezhad at the Presidence of the Republic) has pushed Azerbaijani nationalists towards further radicalisation.
