This paper presents the main ethno-musicological researches on the Middle-East and Central Asia, from the viewpoint of the relationship between musical practice and its social context.  Dealing with several aspects of this question, such as the links between music and power or music and emotion, and the analysis of different forms of maqam (learned music of the area), this text provides a good bibliographical introduction to the most significant ethno-musicological studies on the area.
