On the basis of epigraphic materials collected in the late 1970s by philologist M. Akhmetzianov in the south-eastern districts of the Republic of Tatarstan, the author shows their possible contribution to the history of individual villages, notably through genealogical documents and inscriptions. She notably casts light on their contribution to the reconstruction of the ethnic composition of villages for periods as remote as the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as well as for the study of demographic relations and exchanges between the Middle Volga region and surrounding areas, notably the Noghai steppe.
