Providing a chronology of Uighur protest in Xinjiang from 1988 to the launching of the Strike Hard campaign by the Chinese authorities ten years later, the author assesses the initial success of the repression policy implemented by Beijing in Xinjiang. At the same time B. Hierman wonders about the chances for further evolution of Uighur public protest. Unfortunately, the author does not attempt to cast light on the typological evolution of national political militancy among the Uighurs ― and other repressed minorities of China ―, within and outside China, since the late 1990s.
